NASA’s Asteroid Bennu Sample Reveals Mix of Life’s Ingredients
Studies of rock and dust from asteroid Bennu delivered to Earth by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification and Security–Regolith Explorer) spacecraft have revealed molecules that, on our planet, are key to life, as well as a history of saltwater that could have served as the “broth” for these compounds to interact and combine.
The findings do not show evidence for life itself, but they do suggest the conditions necessary for the emergence of life were widespread across the early solar system, increasing the odds life could have formed on other planets and moons.
“NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission already is rewriting the textbook on what we understand about the beginnings of our solar system,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator, Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “Asteroids provide a time capsule into our home planet’s history, and Bennu’s samples are pivotal in our understanding of what ingredients in our solar system existed before life started on Earth.”
In research papers published Wednesday in the journals Nature and Nature Astronomy, scientists from NASA and other institutions shared results of the first in-depth analyses of the minerals and molecules in the Bennu samples, which OSIRIS-REx delivered to Earth in 2023.
Detailed in the Nature Astronomy paper, among the most compelling detections were amino acids – 14 of the 20 that life on Earth uses to make proteins – and all five nucleobases that life on Earth uses to store and transmit genetic instructions in more complex terrestrial biomolecules, such as DNA and RNA, including how to arrange amino acids into proteins.
Scientists also described exceptionally high abundances of ammonia in the Bennu samples. Ammonia is important to biology because it can react with formaldehyde, which also was detected in the samples, to form complex molecules, such as amino acids – given the right conditions. When amino acids link up into long chains, they make proteins, which go on to power nearly every biological function.
These building blocks for life detected in the Bennu samples have been found before in extraterrestrial rocks. However, identifying them in a pristine sample collected in space supports the idea that objects that formed far from the Sun could have been an important source of the raw precursor ingredients for life throughout the solar system.

BC Jesuit physicist joins NASA's historic OSIRIS-REx mission
Associate Professor of Physics Cyril P. Opeil, S.J., is among a select few scientists taking part in an international research effort to shed light on the nature of asteroids, how the planets formed, and how life might have emerged on Earth.
Fr. Opeil is one of the rare researchers with experience studying the low-temperature thermo-physical properties of meteorites and asteroid formation. As part of NASA’s historic OSIRIS-REx mission, he has been tasked with conducting experiments on specific heat capacity and determining how a material from the asteroid 101955 Bennu expands and contracts at low temperatures.
"For me, it’s a wonderful moment,” said Fr. Opeil. “I think it is a tremendous time for a Boston College physicist, a Jesuit, to be asked to participate in this space mission.....
Launched on September 8, 2016, the OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer) spacecraft traveled more than one billion miles to Bennu, classified as a near-Earth asteroid, and collected about 120 grams of rock and dust from its surface on October 20, 2020. The spacecraft spent more than two years on its return journey before it jettisoned a trapezoid–shaped capsule containing the samples that landed in the Utah desert on September 24, 2023. From there the spacecraft continued on to its second mission, called OSIRIS-APEX, during which it will visit and scan the asteroid 99942 Apophis in 2029.

Truly a wonderful moment. One moment from a great many wonderful moments when the jesuits have used their jolly good hearts and tampered with, denied, or undermined the Holy Bible. And who, from the blind sighted atheist researchers, would suspect that a "man of faith" could tamper with the sample and deliberately contaminate it with organic molecules for the sake of evolutionist theories? What are the chances a member of the most unscrupulous order with a history of moral equvocation would do such a thing? I'd say a bit higher than life arising from freely floating molecules.
But maybe if they and their halfwit atheist fans read their history, they would understand that Fr. Opeil as a man of anti-faith very faithfully continues the tradition of Loyolaist Bible-denying activities, exemplified in the work of such men as Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J who laid the foundations of the "missing links" in the other, latter part of the chain of "human evolution".
