Leviathan (2014 film)

Leviathan (Russian: Левиафан) is a 2014 Russian drama film directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev, co-written by Zvyagintsev and Oleg Negin, and starring Aleksei Serebryakov, Elena Lyadova, and Vladimir Vdovichenkov. A modern reworking of the Book of Job, the film is set on a peninsula by the Barents Sea and tells the story of a man who struggles against a corrupt mayor who wants his piece of land

The movie Leviathan revolves around a hotheaded simpleton named Kolia/Nikolay (Alexei Serebriakov) and the events in his life. The entire panorama of the story is based on the icy aspects of human nature as well as the fissures found in the modern social contracts. It unmasks the truth behind the casual friendliness, blind love and empty trusts. Everything comes down for Kolia, when a crooked mayor named Vadim (Madyanov) eyes for Kolia's property and is in the process of gaining it through his legal power for a derisory sum. Meanwhile, Kolia's family life is also in total disarray with his discontented wife Lilya (Elena Lyadova) and teenage son Roma (Sergey Pokhodaev) (from Kolia's first marriage). Kolia is surrounded by friends, but it is because they find him useful as a skilled mechanic.
To fight against the injustice of his property being stolen from him, Kolia calls his old army friend Dimitri (Vladimir Vdovichenkov), who now works as a slick lawyer in the Russian capitol of Moscow, for help. Dimitri's legal aid and blackmailing shows signs of positive development to Kolia's problems and Mayor Vadim starts to back off from his interest in Kolia's property. However, the initial joyfulness brought through Dimitri's aid starts to culminate when both Lilya and Dimitri start an extramarital affair. Kolia finds about it and eventually forgives his wife, Lilya. Meanwhile Mayor Vadim goes to his friend, an Orthodox high priest, for spiritual comfort and is provided with courage to solve his problems, by the might of the power he holds in his township without looking help from others. This motivates Vadim and he gets hold of himself, and threatens Dimitri to go back to Moscow, and orders his office workers to go forward in obtaining Kolia's property. Lilya, driven by guilt of Kolia's kindness and forgiveness, commits suicide. Later Kolia is arrested for the death of Lilya by authorities citing her death as murder committed by her husband. Kolia becomes distraught when he finds that the charges against him were positively attested by his "friends" and subsequently Kolia is jailed for 15 years by dodgy friends of Vadim. For an entitled money in childcare, Kolia's son is taken in by his "friends"(Angela and Pacha), those who have given statements against him. The army buddy-lawyer from Moscow is no longer seen and finally, Kolia's homestead is torn down for Vadim's projects.
As a conclusion to the film, a sermon by Vadim's friend the high priest is shown where he calls out for a reawakening in the laity and preaches about Truth substituted with Christ, as being God's Legacy.

I now give you a key to the roles, so that you can understand better the gist of the plays:

Vadim = Vladimir Putin, the FAKE SAVIOR

Now, let's begin breaking down some symbols in the movie:


   

The Movie begins with a scene of a shore close to Nikolay's house. The remains of what appears to be a shipwreck allude to the "shipwrecked faith" (1 Tim 1:19) of Russia or the orthodox heresy.



 

Dmitri, a lawyer, an old friend of Nikolay, wants to help him with the troubles he's having with the town mayor, Vadim, who wants to demolish Nikolays property. Nikolay doesn't believe they should negotiate with Vadim.


  

Vadim is a typical bully oligarch, insensitive to the small man's problems and prepared to use threats and violence to achieve his goals. "He has blood on his hands" as everyone in the town knows.

   

Liliya (Nikolay's wife) asking why Vadim is still at large, when there is such a large amount of incriminating evidence. Dmitri posesses a large folder with the crimes of Vadim.

 

His position is still safe. As we will see later, this is "Gods providence".

 

"he is safe as long as he serves his purpose or dies" says Dimitri. Nikolay begs to differ -  the most probable outcome of such a rule ot tyranny is a violent end.

   

Meanwhile the bishop and Vadim are having a meal together. Vadim is being reassured that his power is sure and approved of God. Vadim is a major beneficiary to the corrupt church establishment.

   

"God" will allow him to rule as long as its His will.


  

A scene with the last supper in the background. This may indicate the willingness of the Orthodox church to get rid of Putin in exchange for more power and money.

Dmitri, Angela, Pacha, Liliya, Kolya and another cop friend drive to a camping spot to shoot some target practice. The three icons on the top symbolise the old schismatic orthodoxy and the three *explicit*  postcards in the bottom right are the triple-female-goddesses the gnostic jesuits adore. They quickly run out of bottles to shoot at. The cop friend of Nikolay (pacha) goes through a number of communist era leaders to use for aiming.

          

Pacha, Nikolay's friend, the experienced cop is suprisingly the ONLY ONE  to miss the bottles. As we will see later, he is the antichrist and his wife, ANGELA, the Catholic church. MISSING THE TARGET is the greek words in the Bible for SIN.

"Do you have any of the current leaders?" It's too early for the current ones. . . . . . The other cop friend of Nikolay has many guns... is a military coupe in store for Putin?

  

Today's rulers need to ripen a bit. They need to fill their measure of iniquity [Gen 15:16]

  

"We forgot the nails" The jesuit Logo contains three nails. The jesuits, being gnostics, believe christians are worshipping a dead man and are baptising unto death, not life. Their Christ is another - a ghostly joker who mocks everything, including Jesus, who they believe STAYED on the cross. In other words they are antichrists, denying the flesh and the redeeming death-burial-resurrection of the Messiah/Christ.

The nails are the method of ending the tyranny of the Macho/Salvationary figure Putin represents ( cf. previous scene with the last supper). The Pussy Riot band "protested" in the "Christ the Savior" cathedral in Russia.

Again, this is tied to the shipwreck, which implies that immersion baptism (which the Orthodox  practice) is unable to save or rather what it signifies -  the FAITH in the death-burial-resurrection,  is void. This is the occult symbolism behind "sinking ships" as the Korean Ferry Sewol.

      

Liliya cheats on Nikolay with Dmitri(not shown). Dmitry is democracy or secular law. The orthodox church "cheating" on Nikolay with secularism seals her fate and she seemingly commits suicide, jumping off of a cliff. A drunken Nikolay visits the town rascals who get together in an old abandoned church where they drink. The church rubble symbolises the destruction of Orthodoxy, which failed to heed the warnings and invitation of Catholicism.

     

Pacha calls his rugged wife "a whore".

    

A cryptic reference for the future Catholization of the USA with the major appearance of "Mary".

                          

Pacha's face in the breast of Angela, while she is pouring some vodka. She is Sophia, the large breasted Diana or Hathor.

For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. [Rev18:3]

Nikolay is desperate and bitter over his wife's death. He asks a priest "where is your merciful God". The priests answers "Have you heard of a man called Job?". This implies that Nicholas (in the person of his son Roman) will receive double of his lost power and prosperity from "God" or the pope. The peists talks about Leviathan, whom nobody can defeat, except God. Leviathan or the big enemy clearly is Vadim, responsible for the shipwrecked faith, by killing true orthodoxy and substituting it with a corrupt mobster one.

Nikolay is arrested on suspicion of murdering his wife. This was revealed to be a set up by Vadim, who may have himself ordered Lilya killed.

  

"She was a bit younger" Catholicism ca 313, Orthodoxy ca 1054.
Roman (Nikolay's son) is adopted by Angela and Pacha. The Roman Catholic church has retaken the ROMAN empire from schismatic orthodoxy. Roman is the second Romanov, a better man for the task.

  

Vadim has defeated his enemy, by framing him.  The land is his. He demolishes the house of Nikolay (house of Romanov) . This may mean Putin and his predecessors , the communists, are guilty of the wreckage of the true faith by his anti-western stance and his demolition of true Tzarist orthodoxy. But there is a more specific event that this "set up" references:

On March 4th, while responding to reporters' questions about the events in Ukraine and the Russian people’s reaction to them, Russian President Vladimir Putin referred to Tsar-Martyr Nicholas as “Bloody Nicholas”. His inappropriate choice of words have riled Russian monarchists and Orthodox Christians, who are deeply offended by the use of an old expression popular with the Bolsheviks and enemies of the monarchy. According to reports on monarchist web sites and blogs in Russia, this was not the first time that the Russian President has referred to the last tsar in such a derogatory manner. In the summer of 2011 at a meeting with members of the Olympic construction team in Sochi, Putin, unfortunately, used the same "epithet."

Critics of the last tsar nicknamed him “Bloody Nicholas” because of the Khodynka Tragedy, Bloody Sunday, and the anti-Semitic pogroms that occurred during his reign. Under his rule, Russia was defeated in the Russo-Japanese War.

The movie ends with a long sermon by the hypocrite bishop, friend of Vadim, now talking about truth and sincerity. This seals the movie as a tragedy of an evil eastern world unchecked by the benevolence of "God".
