Donatism (Latin: Donatismus, Greek: Δονατισμός Donatismos) was a Christian sect within the Roman province of Africa that flourished in the fourth and fifth centuries^[1] among Berber Christians. Donatism had its roots in the social pressures among the long-established Christian community of Roman North Africa (present-day Berber countries Algeria and Tunisia), during the persecutions of Christians under Diocletian. The Donatists (named for the Berber Christian bishop Donatus Magnus) were members of a schismatic church not in communion with the churches of the rest of Early Christianity in Late Antiquity.
Donatism was an indirect outcome of Diocletian's persecutions. The governor of Africa had been lenient towards the large Christian minority under his rule during the persecutions. He was satisfied when Christians handed over their Scriptures as a token repudiation of their faith. Some Christians acceded to this convenient action. When the persecutions came to an end, however, they were branded traditores, "those who handed (the holy things) over" by the zealous, mostly from the poorer classes.^[2]
Like the Novatianist schism of the previous century,^[3] the Donatists were rigorists, holding that the church must be a church of "saints," not "sinners," and that sacraments, such as baptism, administered by traditores were invalid. Probably in 311,^{[citation needed]} a new bishop of Carthage, Caecilian, was consecrated by someone who had allegedly been a traditor, Felix of Aptungi; his opponents consecrated a short-lived rival, who was succeeded by Donatus, after whom the schism was named.

should be martyrs and traitors in the Church of God at the same time."

Afghanistan buries woman beaten to death by mob

 

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan women's rights activists dressed head-to-toe in black broke with tradition Sunday to carry the coffin of a woman who was beaten to death by a mob in the capital Kabul over allegations she had burned a Quran.
The mob of men beat 27-year-old Farkhunda before throwing her body off a roof, running over it with a car, setting it on fire and throwing it into a river near a well-known mosque.
The attack was apparently sparked by allegations that Farkhunda, who like many Afghans has just one name, had set fire to a Quran. But Afghanistan's most senior detective said no evidence had been found to support those claims.

Tunisia’s Bardo National Museum is a top attraction for tourists, a sprawling complex that houses a world-famous collection of Roman mosaics and celebrates all the country’s rich, diverse history. The same fame and international importance that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors a year may also have drawn the gunmen who turned it into a slaughterhouse on Wednesday.

’Up until now, 80% of our market targeted seaside tourism,” tourism minister Selma Elluni Rekik told the Ansa news agency on Tuesday. “We now want to focus also on cultural tourism, valorising our archaeological sites like Carthage, El Jam and the Bardo National Museum, where the richest collection of Roman mosaics in the world is kept.”

For this reason Augustine noted that they lived as robbers, died as Circumcelliones, and were honored as martyrs.  The emphasis on martyrdom and the cult of the martyr in Cir-cumcellion theology goes to show more than just the polemicized aspects that Augustine spun in order to discredit them. For these agrestes , Donatism lent Berber-Punic descendents a means of coping with their status of subjugation at the hands of the landed Roman elite........

Though this example of collegiality has been studied

before for the purposes of understanding the evolution of bishops in

early church history, it is my opinion that the collegiality of North

Africans bishops, along with theseniores laici, is best understood

within the framework of the Donatist concept of an impending eschatology. The end of days was soon to come, God had given humanity the ark of salvation in preparation for the eschaton and the leaders and ministers of the ark, the Church, were to act as if the eschaton was already upon them. This is an example of bringing North African belief into their real world and everyday life, hence creating a political theology.

• Why eschatology? Because beliefs about the end times are often central to the motives of Islamic groups. This is certainly the case with ISIS. Dr. Furnish illustrated eschatology of ISIS with Dabiq,their English-language magazine. The name itself refers to a Syrian town where, according to a hadith (a saying by the Prophet Muhammad), a great battle will be fought, ushering in the last times. And there is more than the name. The magazine makes it clear that ISIS believes it is engaging in an end-times struggle against forces of unbelief, injustice, and evil—including Christianity. They are, in the words of Dr. Furnish’s title, “fighting for the end of the [Christian] world.”

In particular, as the Atlantic piece brings out, ISIS has an apocalyptic vision, and crucially, its adherents fervently believe in an imminent eschatology, culminating in a climactic battle against the “Romans” on the Plains of Dabiq in Syria. (Note that the latest ISIS snuff film documenting the beheading of the innocent Copts included a warning that they were coming to Rome.)
