How Pope Francis could help Obama on the Iranian deal

Popes generally use their Easter Urbi et Orbi address, “to the city and the world,” to pray for peace amid global conflicts. Francis followed that tradition on Sunday, among other things commenting on a tentative nuclear deal between the P5+1 nations, including the United States, and Iran.
The pontiff said, “In hope we entrust to the merciful Lord the framework recently agreed to in Lausanne, that it may be a definitive step toward a more secure and fraternal world.”
That may not amount to a direct endorsement, but it’s certainly more favorable than the commentary coming from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or Republicans in Congress about the outline for an accord reached April 2 in Switzerland, not to mention Iranian hardliners who see it as a threat to their national interests. (On Monday, Israel backed off its insistence that Iran halt all uranium enrichment, a move seen as acknowledgement that the pact required concessions on all sides.)

US President Barack Obama could have problems mustering legislative support for a deal, in part because Republicans may want to make an issue out of it in 2016. At the same time, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei hasn’t yet explicitly embraced the agreement, and a political movement called “We Are Anxious,” founded last year to oppose nuclear concessions, is campaigning against it.
The Associated Press reported that roughly 200 hardliners rallied in front of the Iranian parliament building on Tuesday during hearings on the agreement, brandishing banners calling it a “defeat.”
Moderates on both sides of the divide, in other words, may struggle to bring along the hawks in their own shops. In that effort, the Vatican could turn out to be a surprisingly potent resource.

First of all, Pope Francis has plenty of political capital at the moment because of his high approval ratings and perceptions of his moral authority. He also has a proven capacity to translate that capital into results, as his role in restoring relations between the United States and Cuba illustrates.
If Francis were to lend his seal of approval to the nuclear deal, even campaigning for it in the oblique but unmistakable way popes sometimes do on political matters, it could move the needle in terms of public opinion.
On a more long-term basis, the Vatican may be the global institution with the best shot at rebuilding trust between Iran and the West.

Iran is a pervasively religious society whose ultimate authority is a cleric, and to get to the heart of things, one has to be able to engage them not just in terms of realpolitik, but also spiritual concepts. No Western statesman can do that credibly, but the Vatican can.
Moreover, there’s a natural affinity between Catholicism and Shi’a Islam, which is the minority branch of the Muslim world, but the culture-shaping majority in Iran.
Iranian writer Vali Nasr, author of the 2006 book, “The Shia Revival,” argues that the divide between Sunni and Shi’a bears comparison to that between Protestants and Catholics, with Shi’a being the branch closer to Catholicism.

Among the features of Shi’a Islam that parallel Catholicism are:

• A strong emphasis on clerical authority
• An approach to the Qur’an accenting both scripture and tradition
• A deep mystical streak
• Devotion to a holy family (in the case of Shi’ites, the blood relatives of Muhammad) and to saints (the Twelve Imams)
• A theology of sacrifice and atonement through Hussein, who married the daughter of Muhammad and led the early Shi’a community, and is venerated for his death in the battle of Karbala
• Belief in free will (as opposed to the Sunni doctrine of pre-destination)
• Holy days, pilgrimages, and healing shrines
• Intercessory prayer
• Strongly emotional forms of popular devotion

As Nasr points out, anyone who’s ever watched a Good Friday procession in, say, Mexico or the Philippines, including people who flagellate themselves and even have themselves nailed to crosses to recall Christ’s crucifixion, will be struck by the eerie similarities with the Shi’a festival of Ashoura commemorating Hussein’s martyrdom.
Fellow Iranian writer Reza Aslan says that rational interpretation of Islamic law by Shi’ite clergy creates a flexibility sometimes lacking in Sunni Islam, which is often shackled to a literal reading of the Qur’an. Aslan believes Shi’a-influenced societies may be more amenable to experimentation with democracy, human rights, and pluralism, provided they’re grounded in religious reasoning — just as in Catholic social theory.
Benedictine Rev. Mark Serna, a veteran of Catholic/Islamic exchange, has written that “in distinction to Muslims in the Sunni tradition, Shi’ite Muslims are very natural dialogue partners with Roman Catholics.”
This isn’t to say the Vatican is uncritical in its approach to Iran. Above all, Pope Francis has become increasingly outspoken about anti-Christian violence, and Iran’s ambiguous relationship with radical forces that often target Christians and other minorities is a source of burning concern.
Yet the Vatican nonetheless favors keeping lines of communication open, and the interest is clearly reciprocated by Tehran. Diplomatic relations between Iran and the Holy See date to 1954, making them 30 years older than US/Vatican ties, and the Iranian embassy to the Holy See is well-known in Rome for its large staff and activist spirit.
When Vatican and Iranian officials sit down, they speak a common language shaped by shared spiritual and theological concepts.
In a small but telling sign, Italian Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, who heads the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Family, recently met with a delegation of high-level Iranian women including Shahindokht Molaverdi, vice-president for women and family affairs. When the Iranians floated the idea of attending the upcoming World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia in September, an event Pope Francis will attend, Paglia immediately embraced it.
As a result, when Francis visits the United States, he’s set to bring an Iranian delegation in his wake. Not many world leaders could wrap such a gesture into their American debut without triggering a diplomatic fracas.
(Molaverdi told Crux in February she believes Francis could play a role in opening doors. “Certainly this pope has an ability to bring people together, which can also influence governments,” she said.)
Whether opportunities for dialogue can be mobilized quickly enough to make a difference over the nuclear pact, which is supposed to be finalized by June 30, remains to be seen.
Over time, however, if Iran and the West are to find common ground, Pope Francis and his Vatican team could be a key ingredient in making it happen.

For a moment I must explain how the papacy benefits from this in another way. The jesuits have been building false interpretations of prophecy to bamboozle baptists into a diversionary eschatology of a middle east theatre. Two popular interpretations (and you can look them up for yourself) say that before the Second Coming, Russia and Iran will invade israel and attack many nations. If baptists believe that the imminent expansions of Iran-Russia are a herald of the return of Christ, they will be utterly refuted and confounded when the Second Coming does not materialise immediately after that, but neo-catholic Russia and Iran become protectors of Israel instead. Many will lose their faith after this unexpected turn of events. This is the precise reason Shoebat embraces dispensationalism for the most part (except rapturism). Baptist jesuit eschatology and the future timeline of events are designed as a domino cascade of disappointment in evangelicals alongside a confirmation of the veracity of Catholic a- or post millennialism. First, the rapture will not happen. Second, Russia and Iran will not destroy Israel. Third, Christ will not come, but the Pope and the new empire will establish world peace. And 75% of baptist churches will lose membership, because they have been caught in the craftiness of 17 century jesuits.

As for the islamic protestants, it isn't necessary that the "puritan" or "cathar" or "literalist" or "sola scriptura" sunnis are first taken out of the way. They have already have the nails on their coffin in the face of ISIS, SA, and soon - the Ottoman empire. Twin explosions at Christian churches in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore have left at least 14 people dead, and almost 80 killed. A local Taliban faction has already claimed responsibility.
The explosions happened minutes apart, during the Sunday services, in the mainly Christian suburb.
Two churches were targeted: one Catholic, and one Protestant. They are located near each other. Bombers detonated the devices near the gates of both churches.

Tin-opener theology from Turkey

By Spengler For months we have read news reports of an Islamic reform stemming from the University of Ankara's theology department. A widely-cited February 28 report by Robert Pigott, the BBC's religion correspondent, claimed that Ankara would "fashion a new Islam" along "revolutionary" lines. In less flamboyant tone, the story resurfaced in the June 8 issue of Newsweek under the headline, "The New Face of Islam". This is the triumph of hope over fact-checking. "Tin-opener theology" is how the leading Western expert on the subject dismisses the efforts at Ankara University to date. Father Felix Koerner, a German Jesuit, has taught at the university and published the definitive source-book on the supposed reform. He explains that the Ankara theologians want to open up the Koran like a tin can, and take what they want out of it, without touching the real problems of Islamic theology. On this more below. Oddly, it is not just the Western media who have gotten it wrong. A conspiracy theory is circulating among Muslim traditionalists that the Jesuits are plotting with Turkey's secularists to undermine Islam. In February, a Muslim website in Britain, Ummahpulse.com, denounced the Society of Jesus as "the pope's special forces attempting to infiltrate Muslim lines". (See The Pope's Special Forces by Muhammad Tahir, February 29, 2008.) The notion of a "Jesuit plot" against Islam is a paranoid hallucination, for there is no consensus among the Jesuits regarding Islam, much less a plot. A handful of patient Jesuit scholars are immersed in Muslim theology, seeking a dialogue with prospective Islamic reformers. That was the subject of Benedict XVI's meeting on Islam at Castel Gandolfo in Italy in the summer of 2005 (See When even the Pope has to whisper Asia Times Online, January 10, 2006.) Reports from the meeting quoted the pope saying that Islam was incapable of reform, to which other participants took objection. Christian Troll, a German Jesuit, sent the following correction to the website of Daniel Pipes on January 17, 2006: The Holy Father is well-informed enough to know that there have existed and that there exist today, probably increasingly, other interpretations of the Koranic evidence with regard to a theology of revelation. These considered Muslim views and approaches do not (yet?), it would seem, inform the thinking and approach of a sizable Islamic movement or organization - and we do not know what future problems lie ahead in this regard - but it does exist and is vividly discussed in many places, both in academia and beyond. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Reformation" "Problems" "touching" Just the words needed to pull a string in the bigoted and paranoic muslims. Could these "views" and "approaches" involve acknowledging Mary as mother of the muslims as the first step of a future unification? Muslim traditionalists warn of a plot cooked up by the Jesuits in cahoots with Turkey's secular government. Ummahpulse.com fulminated: It appears that Koerner has spent the last few years befriending and "advising" the Ankara school of would-be revisionists whilst at the same time ministering in a state-sanctioned church of Turkey (no high-up government connections there then ...) ... Specifically, Koerner concerns himself with how to infect his Turkish "disciples" with the types of discourse which have led to the current and ongoing disintegration of the Christian Church. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ha-ha-ha. The jesuits want the disintegration of the christian church? Ah, but yes, their "liberation theology" and compromising theological paradigm would give that impression. But if the "turkish fundamentalists" had actually studied history, they would find other and better reasons to oppose the jesuits. Were they talking about the Reformation?  "Muslim Reformers"? Rome has successfully implanted the rhetoric of "the reformation destroyed the christian world" in the minds of these deluded heathen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Islamist website added: And for those of you who might think that we here at UmmahPulse are just paranoid, please note that when the pope visited Ankara in November 2006, we were watching and listening as his colleagues declared that the "80-year-old German theologian known for his sharp intellect - has a much broader agenda than merely improving ties between Catholics and Orthodox Christians. Part of that agenda is an attempt to help spark Islamic theological reform". It is all dead, flat wrong, a tempest in an ibrik (Turkish coffee pot). None of the reporters seems to have read the basic source documents. The Ankara professors never were going to launch an Islamic reformation; Koerner and Troll were not going to put them up to it; and the Turkish government wouldn't let it happen, even if everyone else wanted it. Muslim traditionalists denounce the Ankara professors as instruments of the Turkish secularists, while the June 8 Newsweek report claims that they enjoy the patronage of Turkey's Islamist government. Both claims are false, in fact; the Ankara theologians have no real political patron. Turkey's Islamist government, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, finds itself in mortal confrontation with the country's secularist army and civil institutions. Prosecutors have demanded that the Constitutional Court ban Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) party, an Islamist party whose support depends on the popular Muslim piety of the countryside. The Koranic hermeneutics of the Ankara theologians will be ignored in the confrontation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ignored in the confrontation, but enlarging the camp of Erdogan. That is what you call clean work. By simulating conspiratorial activity, the jesuits have practically delivered Turkey to the AKP. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Turkey's moves toward greater religious freedom, which some saw as the sign of an evolving moderate Muslim society, have been put on hold by a political crisis that could outlaw the post-Islamist ruling AKP," according to Reuters' religion editor Tom Heneghan in a May 23 dispatch. "Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, whose bid to lift a ban on Islamic headscarves at universities triggered the crisis, would probably not champion further religious reform even if he won the court case against his party, Turkish analysts say." As noted, Father Koerner shows that what the Ankara theology department has in mind is not a reformation in any sense of the word. It is not even theology in the sense most people understand the word. Following the late Pakistani theologian Fazlur Rahman (1919-1988), the Ankara group argues that some of the revelation in the Koran was directed to specific people at a specific point in time, and is subject to revision. This includes such matters as polygamy, the wearing of veils, and other matters in which the Koran appears egregiously out of touch with the times. .............

And more recently "moderate" AL SISI, whose Egypt is in the middle of a raging civil war with islamists, tells the leading islamic scholars to "REVOLUTIONIZE ISLAM" or REFORM it. Can there be a more illogical and irresponsible move in the middle of a war with fundamentalist underdogs who appeal to the poor and conservative and the sizeable MB supporters? Beside committing political suicide, SISI could also be doing this as a hundred flowers campaign to mark and later on root out potential enemies to the caliphate within the walls of the Al-Azhar

university.  On the 7th of January, SISI further put a noose on secularism, by attending the Coptic Christmass eve mass, throwing out friendly nationalistic calls.  A little over two weeks after his speech, Charli Hebdo caricatured the Prophet once again.

"The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace" by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins was supposed to be an interfaith event to bring Christianity and Islam together.

But when the Muslim imam began his call to prayer during the concert, he was interrupted by a small woman in the balcony proclaiming that "Jesus Christ alone is Lord of Germany," and shouting, "I break this curse."

She also invoked the name of Martin Luther and warned the audience that what was happening was "a lie."

It happened on Nov. 10, 2013 at the Memorial Church of the Reformation in the Rhineland city of Speyer, built to honor Martin Luther.

"I would call it a holy anger," she recounted. "And then I rose with my flag and I was calling and proclaiming that Jesus Christ is Lord over Germany."

"My purpose was, I broke this curse because [Muslims] say, 'Only Allah is the Lord. He is God, the only God.' And I broke this curse in this church and I broke it over my country," she continued.

Reviving a Dead Nation?

Some might associate Germany with the Nazis, but Germany was once a base for world missions, sending missionaries to Africa and Korea and to America.

Mund is trusting God for a miracle in what is a very wealthy and, some would say, spiritually dead nation.

"I know nothing is impossible for my God. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing," she said.

"From a human point of view I feel our country is lost. It's already lost. It's done. Because I see so many changes in the country, in every area," she continued. "But I trust God that he has a 'Plan A' and that my country is not lost and that He will reach us and He will come and change the whole situation."
